Click Your Ruby Heels

(Listen to sound clip)

Seems like a lifetime I've been holding up these walls
Thinking if I let go they’d surely fall
So I dressed up the windows in curtains and ties
And was content to daydream from inside
Looking out, living in the shadows of doubt

Had a dream one night that I was losing my voice
And a man asked me to make a choice. He said
"There's a river that's running through time
And you can dive in or you can sit on the side
It's up to you; now tell me what you want to do?" He told me:

Chorus:
You can spend a whole lifetime becoming
or you can do what you came here to do
Though your walls may be shaking and crumbling
You've got to click your ruby heels and know
it's all there inside you

So I threw my hat out the window clear over the fence
With all my best excuses and circumvents
Got me a ladder and a new set of rules and I'm climbing over
Gonna change my tune, enter a bigger view, 'cause

Chorus

Well I'm not saying I've lost my fear or that
I think I know how to get there from here, but now
I'd rather risk the fall than to die having never tried to fly, 'cause

Chorus

Click your Ruby Heels and know
It's all there, look inside of you and
Click your Ruby Heels!

Give It All to the Fire

(Listen to sound clip)

I still remember that 4th of July on the eve of our dying love
You invited me to the bonfire. You said,
"It’s not fireworks but it’s fun"
We watched them stack the timber higher
than I ever thought they could
I shook inside when they lit that match.
"Remember, it’s only wood"

While sitting in the fire’s orange glow,
it must have read our hearts
"He will never truly love you", it said,
"and it’s time to walk apart
So give to me your heartbreak with all its sorrow and its pain
And I will burn it down until only the essence of love remains"
Chorus:
Give it all up to the Fire, Give it all up to the Fire
When there’s nothing left to hold on to

It was July again and yet much time had since moved on
I was among five women that year gathered at the Eagle Lodge
The glow of fire called us from the chilly mountain air
As we formed a circle ‘round the hearth, for our evening share

Who could have known what it would draw from each
of us that night?
Surely not the deepest secrets,
the ones long hidden from the light
Yet, one by one we shared our stories, told our truth,
let go our shame
and tossed our tear-soaked tissues into the blazing flames

Chorus

In the silence between words, I heard the fire speak:
"There is so much you must surrender in learning
how to just be
So give to me your greatest fears with all their lies
and all their blame
And I will burn them down until only the truth of love remains"

Chorus

Give it all up to the Fire, give it all up to the Fire
There’s nothing left to hold onto
So, give it all up to the Fire, give it all up to the Fire

The Hero's Journey

(Listen to sound clip)

As a child I lay down on the grass one night
counting every star in that sky
I wondered if God was looking out for me,
from infinity-- farther than I could see
I posed all my questions to the great sky,
hoping thunder and lightning might light up the night
The sky didn’t answer though I thought I could hear,
a small voice whisper in my ear:

Chorus:
Follow that road, your heart will know
the way of the hero's journey
Though it may be bitter or sweet, all roads will lead
to the way of the hero's journey, so keep moving on

As I grew older I forgot in time to look up at the sky, to
question why
Surviving life seemed more than enough,
to keep my faith when the going got tough
Then one day I fell in love
When he broke my heart I looked to help from above
I swore I'd never play the fool again
when a small voice whispered in my head:

Chorus

No one answer is ever complete till you've tasted
both sides of the bittersweet
There's a reason for everything, you can't always see
That's the way of the hero's journey

I'm no stranger to the pendulum's swing
I've learned many a lesson going to and from extremes
But find me that sweet spot that lies between
Where that small voice whispers in my dreams

I Remember You

(Listen to sound clip)

The dawn was just a growing light
when I heard the call of a loon in flight
A silver sound across a silver lake has left a memory in its wake
of holding you so closely, holding you so closely

From the moment our eyes first met,
I knew I’d found a long lost friend
We laughed and called it deja vu, we looked away,
but we both knew
We’ve returned to love again, returned to love again

Chorus:
I remember when you were my child
When you were my only friend
I remember you as the one I loved
Now we’ve come full circle, full circle again
We’ve come full circle again

Outside my window I still can see
a fading star through the willow tree
In another life - so near, so far, we stood on the edges of our hearts
Trembling like these leaves before me
Trembling like these leaves before me

Chorus

Soon I’ll rise to greet the day, and though you live so far away
All is not the way it seems,
for tonight we’ll walk together in our dreams
And a heart remembers what it’s seen,
a heart remembers what it’s seen

Chorus

Home

(Listen To sound clip)

I heard the cry of a million voices through the ages of all time
The lonely cry of Soul for home and
the loudest voice was mine
I’ve gladly paid the price of hunger for
it drove me to your well
Now I find I’m awakening to my truest self
You lift your cup, this time I accept the drink
For I’ve nothing left to hold on to except love
and my faith in you

Chorus:
The fox has its hole, the bird has its nest
But there’s no place on earth where my heart can rest
The memory leaves me haunted
All I’ve ever wanted is to go back home
All I’ve ever wanted is to go back home

Dreams will come and for a moment I awake
standing on the shores of a misty mountain lake
You greet me there, in the place we’ve always met
We walk for a while, you say "Never forget
who you are, in the very deepest part
Home is as close as the beat of your own heart"

Chorus

Could it be that it’s really not so far
And there’s no place we need to go to get where we already are?

Chorus

There are words in me that have no words
that could ever begin to describe
this place that is not a place
where my heart can soar across the great divide

*Thank you to Fran Blackwell for inspiring me with her story of the cry of Soul

Love Is All There Is

(Listen to sound clip)

If I had my life to live over, I'd travel much lighter next time
I'd take more chances, hold on to less,
dare to step out of the line just to see what I'd find
You see, I've been one of those people who lived life so seriously
Hour after hour, day after day, year after year, bound by my fear, but now I --

Chorus:
Give more love and worry less
Looking back now I see how life provides the best
So I spend more time with my family and friends
Cause in the end, you know, love is all there is
Oh, it comes right down to this: Love is all there is

If I had my life to live over, I'd slow down and take my time
To find a kinder word, go for my best,
to lend a hand to those less fortunate
Oh, I seldom took the time just to look you in the eye,
to listen and be there with you
Always something on my mind, something I'd yet to find,
something I've always found in you, when I --

Chorus

If I have my life to live over I'd travel much lighter next time
I'd do more laughing, eat more ice-cream
I'd dare to dream I can do anything, and I'd...

Chorus

Adapted from the poem "If I had My life to live Over" attributed to 85-year-old Nadine Stair, from Louisville, Kentucky. Whispers of the Heart

(Listen to sound clip)

Does anybody really know how true love happens?
One heart that speaks to you across a crowded room
It's funny how instinct knows where the heart wants to grow
though we don't always listen to what we know

Seems every song on the radio speaks of a love that's been broken
Why do I know all the words too well?
Is there another road we could have chosen?
Can we reach across the distance and try to understand?
Maybe open our hearts once again

Chorus:
If every day that we live, we ask, what have I to give
and what have I to learn from you?
The illusion of distance can't keep us apart
When we listen to the whispers of the heart

I pass a stranger on the street and for a moment our eyes meet
He whispers that he knows the secrets of my heart
And though we live worlds apart and he will never know my name
Could our hopes and our dreams be much the same?

Chorus

Like a memory forever knocking at my door
Reminding me that to learn to love is what I came here for

This Amazing Day

(Listen To sound clip)

Oh, I come by this love, it's just so natural, so right
Finally, now I see myself by looking through your eyes
And there's one thing that I want, to give this love all back to you
So I give it to all life, I know that's what you'd have me do

You're my teacher, you're my brother, my love and my friend
You're in everyone I meet, this is a love without end
And I've never known a heart that is more gentle or more true
If I can learn the ways of love, I know I'll learn from you, from you

Chorus:
i thank You God for most this amazing
day:for the leaping greenly spirits of trees
and a blue true dream of sky;and for everything
which is natural which is infinite which is yes

Now, I have traveled very far to come deep inside what’s true
I am soul and I exist by the grace and love of you
If I breathe it is your essence, if I hear it is your sound, and
to see your love in everything is to dance,
to dance, on sacred ground

Chorus

Where does love come from?
After all of these years breathing thin air, I found you there

Chorus

Heart of My Heart

(Listen to sound clip)

There comes a time in everyone’s life
A special moment that turns on the light
I’d been walking in darkness and I didn’t even know
I was a prince dressed in rags, an heir to the throne
In a dream came a postcard from out of the blue
"Dear One", is all it said, "I’ve been missing you"

Something stirred inside this heart of mine
a whisper from the past, coming back through time
in that moment I remembered who I truly am
and how I’ve searched for your love since time began
Still, the self imposed wound can hurt us most of all
Feeling so unworthy, I turned from your call

Chorus:
Heart of my heart, you are the Soul of my Soul
Time after time, you've led me to the threshold
One day (This time), I’ll walk through that door
And live this life like I never lived it before

Years went by, and I don’t know why
I’d fall asleep again, yet still you’d try
You’d send all of your horses and all of your men,
to help me put the missing pieces back together again.
And now your love has finally broken through
If it takes my whole life, I’m gonna give it all back to you

Chorus

Now here I stand on the other side
There’s no looking back. I’ve made up my mind
to live this adventure for all that it’s worth
To do it for love, do it to serve

I’ve been holding some dreams like a bird in the hand
thinking time was on my side -I’d get back to them again
Little did I know just how quickly it goes
You’ve got to catch that wave, go where the river flows
We all have a gift that only we can give
It’s time to bring it out - time to fully live!

Chorus

How Do You Find God?

(Listen to sound clip)

Searching only for the higher ground,
I miss the ferns and wild hollyhock
Six thousand feet of mountain, I hurry to the very top
I cry out to the valley below, but I only hear my echo, asking

Chorus:
How? How do you -- how do you find God?

Thinking it must be wherever I'm not,
I left my home to find it somewhere
I searched the pyramids of Egypt, only the memory was there
From the Oracle to the peaks of Tibet
seemed the more I pursued the further I'd get

Chorus:
Where do you -- where do you -- where do you find God?

I've always felt you near, just out of reach, haunting my dreams
Why don't you speak so I can hear? Are you here?
One day while dreaming by my window,
a white feather chanced to pass
Caught in the beauty of its motion, I slipped between the crack
Now I am that feather, light as air, and God is everywhere

In the bird and tree, the air I breathe, the weave of the tapestry
Were you so close I could not see? Now I see

Chorus:
How do you -- how do you -- how do you find God?

Chant:
In the bird and tree, the air I breathe, the weave of the tapestry
Sunrise at dawn, french roast is on, a robin sings a morning song
A sky deep blue, singing the "HU"
friends whose hearts are strong and true
Tucker or Max, snuggled in my lap, curling up for an afternoon nap
Chocolate for dessert, my favorite old shirt,
planting flowers in the dirt
Fresh bread in the oven, good friends are coming
long stemmed roses by the dozen
Sunset on the lake, a birthday cake, laughing 'til my belly aches
Slow dancing in the dark, valentine from Mark
A taxi ride through Central Park

*"HU" is an ancient name for God. When sung aloud or silently it can uplift and open the heart to greater love and joy.
